Caprica Comes Out

Caprica logoAfter six years of Battlestar Galactica, it’s hard to adjust to a different show with a whole new look and feel.  But after the pilot and just two episodes, Caprica is starting to turn into something interesting in its own right.

After a passing comment in last week’s episode that was easy to miss, this week revealed one of the characters as both married and gay.  What makes this different from most American TV with married gay characters is that he’s married to another man…

2009 National Equality March

rainbow flag at the U.S. CapitolThis year’s National Coming Out Day was marked by the National Equality March in Washington, DC.  I’ve always missed the marches in the past, so this year I decided to go.  What a great time!

It’s easy to forget that there are lots of LGBT folk (and lots of straight allies too!) around the country.  But standing in the crowds as we began to organize before the march, it was inspiring to look around and see all the different people.

Reflections on Authorizing Marriage?

In the volume Authorizing Marriage?: canon, tradition, and critique in the blessing of same-sex unions, authors from the Jewish and Christian perspectives were asked to reflect on a set of questions regarding voices within the Judeo-Christian canon which may speak to questions of same-sex relations (including erotic union), bases for justifying same-sex unions from scripture, liturgical practice and religious law, and the possible ways of using exegesis and theological reflection to legitimate any new same-sex constructs (Jordan 1). The authors approach their work from several points of view: biblical interpretation, Greek philosophical influences within Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity, liturgical rites associated with marriage, and theological assessments of current discourse surrounding same-sex relationships (Jordan 1-2). What follows are a few reflections sparked by the essays in this volume.
